2 Supplements That May Make a Difference in Prostate Cancer

Guess what? Two over-the-counter supplements were put to the clinical test, and both improved prostate health! At the end of this blog, I’ll share the names of the two products. However, this blog is strictly not an endorsement or recommendation to try either or both products without physician supervision. That said, here is the published study.

Did a study show that two commercial supplements improve prostate health?

Yes. It was the second phase of a single-center randomized clinical trial at Bedford Hospital (Bedford, England). Results were published in October 2025.[i] The study group included 208 men with biopsy-confirmed prostate cancer (PCa), all of whom were on Active Surveillance (AS). The research objective was to evaluate the impact on PCa of two specific dietary supplements.

The study was based on a body of evidence regarding phytochemicals and probiotics.

  • Phytochemicals are substances found in edible plants such as broccoli, turmeric, cranberries, tea, and ginger. They have been linked to lower incidence of PCa and other cancers.[ii]
  • Probiotics are strains of beneficial live organisms found in foods like yogurt, kimchi, kefir and supplements. They help the gut biome, and are linked to wider systemic benefits. Low levels of certain strains have been linked to higher PCa incidence rates and biochemical recurrence.[iii]

All study participants were tracked with PSA tests every 4 months and questionnaires regarding urinary and sexual function. Of the group, 203 were experiencing PCa progression (rising PSA). The study involved an active intervention for four months. Statistical findings were then calculated.

What was the intervention?

All participants were given a twice-daily supplement product derived from phytochemical-rich foods, and had to stop using any other supplements for the duration of the trial. The capsule contents were derived from six different food types designed to provide a range of synergistic benefits with at least twice as much phytochemical power than what a healthy diet would contain. Also, half of the subjects were randomly assigned to receive a Lactobacillus probiotic (the other half received a placebo).

What impact did the phytochemicals and probiotics have on prostate cancer?

The study revealed a positive impact of phytochemicals and probiotics on PCa. PSA levels tended to be stable. There were also some improvements in urinary function. A Nov. 14, 2025 report in Renal & Urology News said,

Adding a phytochemical-rich food supplement to active surveillance appeared to slow progression of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and improve urinary symptoms among men with low-risk prostate cancer … [and] also found that adding a Lactobacillus probiotic supplement appeared to further reduce PSA progression and a marker of inflammation.

The study authors themselves noted, “What was novel about this study was that men randomised to take an additional blend of five Lactobacillus probiotics had a further three-fold slowing of PSA progression as well as reduction of inflammation.”

What are the implications for PCa patients on Active Surveillance?

This study has significant implications for PCa patients on AS. The research team observed that roughly 60% of PCa patients with low-risk disease initially choose AS, but within 5 years 50% have dropped out. Thus, the team theorized that more patients would stick with AS if their PSA remained stable, and that dietary interventions can contribute to that.

They conclude that

this study adds to the growing evidence that men managed with surveillance can empower themselves through lifestyle changes that could influence PCa progression and improve their symptoms. In addition to modifiable factors such as exercise, smoking, and omega-3–rich diets, this study suggests that boosting dietary phytochemicals and probiotics could also help.
