Dealing with Bone Pain in Prostate Cancer

Here at our prostate detection and treatment center practice, we noticed that one of the most common symptoms of advanced prostate cancer is bone pain resulting from cancer cells metastasizing (spreading) to your bone, particularly the pelvis, the lower parts of the spine, and the thighbones.

Metastasis of prostate cancer to the bones is often treated with radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgery, and hormone therapy. Below is a quick guide to dealing with bone pain and promoting bone health when you have prostate cancer.

Dealing with Bone Pain

  • Be consistent with your pain medications. If you don’t notice pain relief after taking a certain medication, tell your doctor about it or see a doctor specializing in pain management.
  • Consider physical therapy. In addition, do yoga and related meditative exercises.
  • Apply hot and cold compress therapy for pain.
  • Ask your doctor about alternative therapies such as massage, acupuncture, herbal remedies, etc.
  • Communicate feelings of pain and discomfort to your doctor.

Promoting Bone Health

  • Consider increasing your calcium intake by consuming low-fat dairy products and fatty fish such as salmon, swordfish, mackerel, sardines, herring. Dark leafy greens are also excellent plant-based sources of calcium.
  • Do light exercises such as short walkings, swimming, light weight-lifting, and stair climbing.
  • Consider increasing your sun exposure if you think you have less of it. Or ask your doctor about the possibility of taking Vitamin D supplements.
