SABR Prostate Radiosurgery
The Sperling Prostate Center is pleased to offer prostate radiosurgery using SABR (stereotactic ablative radiotherapy) technology, a highly advanced—and vastly improved—system of radiation treatment for cancer.
What is VMAT-enhanced prostate radiosurgery?
SABR prostate radiosurgery is a painless, ultra-targeted form of radiation treatment with significantly better results than traditional radiation techniques. The Sperling Prostate Center is one of the first cancer treatment centers to offer this advanced system, giving our patients the advantage of improved accuracy, precision, and effectiveness of their unique treatment plan.
How is it different from other treatments?
The core technology in this treatment—Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT)—is an innovative way to deliver radiation treatments in which the target area is continuously irradiated while the source of the beam rotates around the patient. An integrated suite of sophisticated digital imaging tools enable real-time 3D mapping of the prostate during the procedure, so patients receive a more accurate, aggressive delivery of their treatment while vastly minimizing unnecessary radiation exposure to other tissue.
Conventional radiation treatment methods do not include the ability to see the prostate gland during the treatment, increasing the risk of exposure to other parts of the body, as well as the potential for a less effective delivery than originally thought. But with the Sperling Prostate Center’s SABR technology and real-time 3D imaging, patients benefit from superior precision and efficacy AND shorter sessions of just five minutes or less. Our ability to track the status and location of the prostate throughout treatment also gives us the flexibility adjust the intensity of radiation delivery in real time—rather than updating a patient’s treatment protocol based on after-the-fact results.
Because our system of radiotherapy delivers radiation more directly to the cancer source, it provides a host of advantages over other treatment options:
- 5 day treatment plan
- Individual sessions as short as 5 minutes
- No need for an invasive surgical procedure, implants, or hormones
- Better bladder DVH
- Higher rate of erectile function preservation
- CBCT to see prostate/rectum interface
A note on radiation
At Sperling Prostate Center every patient is unique and deserves an individualized approach to treatment. Contrary to conventional wisdom, we believe radiation should be used sparingly, given the inherent risks. However, under the right circumstances, SABR radiosurgery can be a powerful tool for non-invasive cancer treatment.
However, we also offer highly specialized therapies that in many cases deliver a more targeted, effective treatment with fewer side effects and overall risks. (Learn more here.) Whether used in concert or individually, SABR radiosurgery and Focal Laser Ablation are superior options with drastically reduced discomfort, down-time, and side effects, compared with conventional prostate cancer treatment.
